Road Safety Committee

The Society signed up to the European Road Safety Charter in 2006 and following this the Road Safety Committee was established. The aim of the Committee is to ensure that every available avenue is opened in an attempt to reduce the number of people killed on Irish roads. The Society has a great channel of communication throughout the Irish motor industry and in particular our own membership network, to enable us to deliver in some way a strong and forceful message to motorists in relation to the whole area of road safety.

Major issues addressed by the Committee to date have included:

  • A series of advertisements in various publications carrying strong anti drink drive messages.
  • The production of an information leaflet in relation to Winter driving giving seven simple steps to enhance personal safety and that of the vehicle.
  • The Society is also endeavouring put in place a training programme for the safe installation and fitting of child car seats.

The Society is working closely with the Road Safety Authority and has had numerous meetings with their Chief Executive, Noel Brett. The Committee have also met with the Accident & Investigation Unit of An Garda Siochana to try and establish what they see as the main factors in road traffic accidents.
