The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) today (1st September) released the official figures for new cars registered in August 2009 which at 2,414 are down 54% on August 2008 (5,252). The year to date figure, at 52,906 is down 63.67% on the figure to end of August 2008 (145,643).
Commenting on the figures SIMI Director General Alan Nolan said, “New car registrations continue to lag at a worryingly low level. We are still looking at an overall market that is two-thirds down on last year, which was already 18% down on the previous year, so the Irish Motor Industry is effectively operating at 30% of 2007 levels

SIMI Launches Nationwide Safe Car Campaign 2009 offering Motorists Free Car Safety Check

The SIMI (Society of the Irish Motor Industry) today (31st August) launched its ‘Safe Car Campaign 2009’ with the actress Orlaith Rafter in attendance. The SIMI is offering motorists a visual car check, free of charge, at participating dealerships for the months of September and October 2009, just in time for the back to school run!

Figures issued by SIMI show that new car sales for the month of June at 4,813 are 39.13% down on the same month last year (7,907). This is not as big a fall as previous months, but this needs to be seen in the context of the lower level of sales experienced in June of last year.

Figures issued by SIMI show that new car sales for the month of May at 5,118 are 49.4% down on the same month last year (10,133). This is not as big a fall as previous months, the year to date (January to May) total at 42,040 is 63.7% down on the same period last year (116,108).
