WALK PEER: Building a More Inclusive Future for the Irish Motor Industry

Programmes such as WALK PEER offer a valuable pathway for the Irish motor industry to develop a more inclusive, diverse, and sustainable talent pipeline. As a Department of Education-supported pilot under the Comprehensive Employment Strategy, WALK PEER works directly with students aged 16–18 across partner schools to identify career interests early and support their transition into further education, training, and employment. Through a structured five-year journey, including one-to-one guidance from Careers & Employment Facilitators, career discovery, work experience, and ongoing mentoring, participants are equipped with the practical skills, confidence, and workplace readiness needed to succeed in real industry environments.

For SIMI members and employers, this early intervention approach is particularly impactful. By engaging students in the final years of school and aligning their ambitions with real-world opportunities, WALK PEER helps create a pipeline of motivated, job-ready individuals who are supported not just at entry level, but throughout their first years in employment. This reduces barriers to recruitment, enhances retention, and ensures employers are supported in providing meaningful, sustainable roles.

Engagement with initiatives like WALK PEER also enables the Irish motor industry to address ongoing skills shortages while demonstrating leadership in diversity, equity, and inclusion. The programme’s collaborative model linking schools, families, training providers, and employers ensures a well-supported transition for each participant, resulting in stronger long-term employment outcomes.

By embracing programmes like WALK PEER, the motor industry can continue to build a workforce that reflects modern Ireland while strengthening its reputation as a progressive and inclusive sector.
