New Car Registrations lag behind that of Pre-COVID levels

The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI), today released the official 221 new vehicle registration figures for April. New car registrations for April were up 10.3% (7,886) when compared to April 2021 (7,147). Registrations year to date are up 4.7% (57,776) on the same period last year (55,177) and are 20.9% behind (73,030) that of pre-Covid levels.

New car registrations for February were down 12.2% (12,031) when compared to February 2021 (13,698). Registrations year to date are down 4.6% (37,058) on the same period last year (38,838).

A key environmental policy to have almost a million electric vehicles (EVs) on the road by 2030 will be a huge challenge unless the Government incentivises and supports dealing with the oldest polluting cars, while exponentially increasing the charging infrastructure nationwide, according to a new report for SIMI by Arup and economist Jim Power on reducing light fleet carbon emissions to achieve Government targets.
